Recorded in 1958 by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder and supervised by Prestige founder Bob Weinstock, "Soultrane" captures John Coltrane at a pivotal moment—working alongside pianist Red Garland during one of the most fertile stretches of his early career. This 2022 Analogue Productions repressing belongs to the celebrated Prestige Mono Series, cut from the analogue masters by renowned engineer Kevin Gray and distinguished from the 2014 issue by its 2021 center-label year and updated phonographic copyright dates. It's a faithful return to a document that helped define Coltrane's ascent.
The playing here is a study in balance. Coltrane's tenor saxophone is fluid and searching, propelled by the peerless rhythm section of Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums.
