Study In Brown by Clifford Brown And Max Roach.

Recorded across two February 1955 sessions, this record captures one of the great partnerships in modern jazz at its creative peak. The Clifford Brown and Max Roach group represented the crest of hard bop, pairing a trumpet prodigy with one of the most inventive drummers the music has ever known. It's a document made all the more poignant by history, and its standing among the essential jazz albums of the decade has only grown in the decades since its original EmArcy release.

Much of what makes it compelling is the interplay between its players. Brown's trumpet is warm, agile, and endlessly melodic, while Roach drives everything forward with a rhythmic imagination that never settles for mere timekeeping. Harold Land's tenor saxophone offers a robust foil in the front line, and the rhythm section of Richie Powell on piano and George Morrow on bass keeps the whole enterprise swinging with poise and drive. It's an ensemble where every voice earns its place.

This Acoustic Sounds Series reissue treats the music with the respect it deserves, mastered and lacquer-cut by Ryan Smith at Sterling and supervised by Chad Kassem. The gatefold features Herman Leonard's photography, and a color insert points toward companion titles in the series. A repress drawn from the boxset edition, it's a beautifully realized pressing for collectors who want this classic to sound its best.
