There are live records, and then there are records that carry the weight of a room, the ghosts in its walls, and the friendships that made it possible. Swingin' Live at the Church in Tulsa, released on March 8, 2024 via Lightning Rod Records, is unmistakably the latter. Recorded at the Tulsa studio best known as the home base of the late, great Leon Russell, this set finds legendary roots star Taj Mahal returning to a space steeped in the spirit of a huge influence and personal friend. You can practically hear the history in the boards.
The ten songs gathered here reach across the many genres Taj has explored across his incomparable career, from deep country blues to swaggering swing and the sun-warmed island textures he has long made his own. Side A opens with "Betty And Dupree" before rolling through "Mailbox Blues" and "Queen Bee," while the second side brings "Lovin' In My Baby's Eyes," "Waiting For My Papa To Come Home," and "Slow Drag." It is a program that never sits still, moving from the intimate to the raucous with the ease of a master who has nothing left to prove.
Flip to the back half and the range only widens. "Sitting On Top Of The World" and the gorgeous "Twilight In Hawaii" showcase two very different corners of Taj's musical world, and the closing pair, "Corrina" and "Mean Old World," land with the kind of lived-in authority that only comes from decades on the bandstand. Across all of it, Taj himself is a one-man orchestra, credited on vocals, guitar, banjo, ukulele, and piano, reminding you just how much ground a single artist can cover.
The billing here is The Taj Mahal Sextet, and the lineup is a joy. Taj's long-time core, bassist Bill Rich, drummer Kester Smith, and guitarist and Hawaiian lap steel player Bobby Ingano, is augmented beautifully by dobro player Rob Ickes and guitarist and vocalist Trey Hensley, who also brings acoustic guitar into the mix. Ingano's lap steel and electric work weaves through the songs alongside Ickes' dobro, giving the whole set a shimmering, conversational quality that suits a live setting perfectly.
This particular offering is the "Splattered Tri-Color" variant, limited to just 500 copies, making it a genuine prize for collectors of Taj's later work and for anyone drawn to small-run pressings with real character. Of that run, 100 copies were autographed by Taj and sold directly through his Bandcamp, so a signed piece is scarcer still.
For fans of American roots music at its warmest and most generous, this is a record to live with, a document of a great artist swinging freely in a room full of memory and friendship.
