Bonnie Raitt's "Takin My Time" arrives as a 1973 Warner Bros. release that captures the young slide guitarist and interpreter at a pivotal moment, moving fluidly across blues, folk, R&B, and something harder to name. Produced by John Joseph Hall, the album collects ten songs that range from Motown muscle to calypso, from country blues to tender balladry, making it one of the most stylistically adventurous entries in her early catalog.
Side A opens with "You've Been In Love Too Long," a nod to the Stone-Agate and Jobete publishing world of Motown, before drifting into the intimacy of "I Gave My Love A Candle" and the plea of "Let Me In." Mose Allison's wry "Everybody's Cryin' Mercy" gives Raitt a chance to sink into knowing social commentary, and the side closes with "Cry Like A Rainstorm," one of the tracks engineered by John Haeny and Wayne Dailey. This particular Terre Haute first pressing variant carries an alternate label layout, with "Cry Like A Rainstorm" showing an additional publishing credit under Glasco Music and Walden Music.
Side B is where the record's restless curiosity truly shows. It opens with "Wah She Go Do," a calypso number drawn from the Calypso Rose album on Straker Calypso, distributed out of Jamaica, Long Island, New York, an unexpected and joyful detour. From there the album settles into the warm groove of "I Feel The Same," the self-questioning folk of "I Thought I Was A Child," and a medley pairing "Write Me A Few Of Your Lines" with "Kokomo Blues," where Raitt's bottleneck playing pays its debts to the country blues tradition. The set closes on Randy Newman's "Guilty," a smoky, resigned late-night confessional.
The album was tracked at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, with overdubs cut at Warner Bros. Recording Studios in North Hollywood and mixing handled by Rick Heenan at Village Recorders in West L.A. Lanky Linstrot engineered the overdub sessions. The record was mastered by Arnie Acosta and Doug Sax at the Mastering Lab across June and July of 1973, and the "T" etched into the runouts marks it as a product of the Columbia Records pressing plant in Terre Haute.
Housed in a gatefold sleeve, the package reflects the care of its era, with art direction and design by Sandy Kroopf and Tom Gamache. Cover photography comes from Michael Dobo, while Kroopf also contributed the innerspread and back photo. The Warner Bros. Burbank labels carry the "℗ 1973 Warner Bros. Records Inc." credit below the tracks, with Dick Waterman credited for management. A genuine slice of early seventies Raitt, spun onto vinyl with unusual reach and taste.
