Tell Everybody! (21st Century Juke Joint Blues From Easy Eye Sound) by Various.

Some records arrive with a mission, and "Tell Everybody! (21st Century Juke Joint Blues From Easy Eye Sound)" wears its purpose right in the title. This is a compilation that gathers the raw, electrified spirit of the juke joint and drags it forward into the present century, courtesy of the Easy Eye Sound stable. It plays like a night spent leaning against the wall of a smoky room where the blues never went anywhere; it just got louder, dirtier, and more alive.

The set opens with "Coal Black Mattie" and never really lets up, moving through the title track "Tell Everybody" and into the brooding "Tall Shadow" before "Every Chance I Get (I Want You In The Flesh)" lays its cards on the table. There is grit and swagger throughout the A side, and it closes out with the pleading pulse of "Anything You Need." This is music built for volume, best played when the room is warm and the company is willing.

Flip it over and the B side digs into deeper, stranger territory. "Willow Witchin'" and "No Lovin'" keep the hips moving, while "Daughter Of Zion" reaches toward something more spiritual. "Buffalo Road" and the closing "Collinwood Fire" round out a collection that understands the blues as a living tradition, one still being written and rewritten by artists who feel it in their hands and their throats.

Two tracks stand apart in their sound design and reward close listening. "Catfish Blues" on the A side and "Don't Let The Devil Ride" on the B side are both presented in Mono, a deliberate choice that pulls those performances tight and close, giving them the immediate, in the room presence of an old field recording. Everything else spreads out in Stereo, so the record breathes between the intimate and the expansive as it moves.

Behind the boards sits Dan Auerbach, who produced the collection and shares mixing duties with Allen Parker. That team gives the whole affair its characteristic Easy Eye fingerprint: fat, tactile, and unafraid of a little dirt in the corners. These are songs that sound like they were captured rather than manufactured, with the room and the players left audible in the mix.

This pressing comes on Grey Marble vinyl as an Indie Exclusive, a swirling, one of a kind visual to match the personality of the music pressed into it. For anyone chasing the sound of the modern juke joint, or simply looking to hear the blues carried into the 21st century with its teeth intact, this is a compilation worth spinning again and again.
