The Albert by The Albert.

Cut in 1970 at Jimi Hendrix's freshly minted Electric Lady Studios in New York, this self-titled outing captures a large, brass-heavy ensemble working in the fertile space where jazz met the harder edges of the era. That the sessions happened in a room built for rock lends the record an unusual pedigree, and Kim King's engineering brings a physical presence to the horns that feels custom-made for the space. With Jimmy Curtiss handling the album design and cover photography by Dan Entin Studios, it arrived as a fully realized artifact of its moment.

The band's identity is built on its horn section: Michael Gibson and Jay Silva anchoring lead trombone and trumpet, with Jon Huston and Richard Meisterman stepping out for solos that keep the arrangements from ever settling into routine. Frank Vicari's tenor saxophone adds a burnished, vocal quality, while Howard Wyeth's organ and piano thicken the harmonic bed. Underneath, Paul Petruccelli's bass and Barry Lazarowitz's drums lock into grooves that swing hard, and Otis Smith's vocals and congas push the whole enterprise toward something earthy and soulful.

For collectors, this is a genuine period piece—an original Perception pressing that rewards repeated spins with its interplay and its place in Electric Lady's early history. It's the kind of overlooked large-group jazz date that gets richer the closer you listen.
