The Amazing Bud Powell, Volume 1 by Bud Powell.
Few records in the modern jazz canon carry the weight of "The Amazing Bud Powell, Volume 1," a set that captures one of bebop's most brilliant and volatile pianists at the peak of his invention. This Japanese pressing, manufactured by King Record Co., Ltd. and issued in 1978 under the Blue Note banner, then a division of United Artists Music and Records Group, gathers material from two landmark sessions and presents Powell as both a solo force and a bandleader of rare imagination.
The album opens with the astonishing "Un Poco Loco," heard here across three separate takes, a rare and revealing sequence that lets you follow Powell and drummer Max Roach as they wrestle with one of the most rhythmically daring compositions of its era. Recorded May 1, 1951 with Curly Russell on bass, this trio material also delivers "Dance Of The Infidels," "52nd St. Theme," and an alternate master of "It Could Happen To You," each a study in Powell's percussive attack and harmonic daring.
The August 9, 1949 date brings a heavier front line and some of the most celebrated bebop ensemble playing ever committed to tape. Here Powell is joined by trumpeter Fats Navarro and a young Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone, with Tommy Potter on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. Their reading of "Wail," "Ornithology," and the classic "Bouncing With Bud" crackles with the fire of the bebop revolution, Navarro's gleaming lines and Rollins's muscular tone locking in against Powell's driving keyboard.
Side B is anchored by two versions of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia," the master and its alternate placed side by side so listeners can savor the subtle shifts between them. The record closes on the trio's "Parisian Thoroughfare," a Powell original that has become a standard in its own right, rounding out a program that moves seamlessly between intimate trio settings and full quintet firepower.
This edition benefits from remastering by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, whose engineering has long defined the Blue Note sound. The package pairs cover design by John Hermansader with a cover photograph by Francis Wolff, and includes liner notes by both Leonard Feather and Kazutomi Aoki, offering context for these historic performances.
For collectors and listeners alike, this is essential Bud Powell: the alternate takes and studio variations make it a document of the creative process, while the finished masters stand as some of the defining statements of bebop piano. A cornerstone of any serious jazz shelf, and a record that rewards repeated, close listening.
