The Amazing Bud Powell, Volume 1 by Bud Powell.
Few records capture the volatile genius of bebop piano quite like this landmark collection. Assembled from two remarkable sessions, one recorded on August 9, 1949 and the other on May 1, 1951, it presents Bud Powell at the height of his powers, a pianist whose harmonic daring and relentless drive helped define the modern jazz vocabulary. Originally released on Blue Note Records at 767 Lexington Ave, N.Y.C., this is essential listening for anyone tracing the roots of postwar jazz.
The 1951 session, which anchors much of the program, is a trio setting of extraordinary intensity. With Curly Russell on bass and the incomparable Max Roach on drums, Powell tears through his signature composition "Un Poco Loco," presented here in three revelatory versions, the 1st and 2nd takes alongside the master. Hearing the piece evolve across these attempts is a rare window into the creative process, each pass charged with the Afro-Cuban urgency that made the tune legendary. The same trio delivers "Dance Of The Infidels," a spirited run through Thelonious Monk's "52nd St. Theme," an alternate master of "It Could Happen To You," and a dazzling "Parisian Thoroughfare."
The 1949 session opens up the sound into a full quintet, and what a quintet it is. Powell is joined by the brilliant, short lived trumpeter Fats Navarro and a young Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone, with Tommy Potter on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. Together they burn through "Wail," "Bouncing With Bud," and the bebop anthem "Ornithology," the front line trading ideas with fearless invention. The interplay between Navarro's gleaming lines and Rollins's emerging voice makes these tracks a document of a fleeting, magical moment.
Across both dates, the program balances repertoire and rarity. Two versions of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia" appear back to back, an alternate master and the master itself, giving the listener a chance to hear how Powell reshaped a familiar theme. The trio and quintet sides complement one another beautifully, the smaller group revealing Powell's inner architecture and the larger ensemble showcasing his role as a bandleader and catalyst among giants.
The physical package carries the unmistakable Blue Note signature. Cover design comes from John Hermansader, with photography by Francis Wolff, whose images helped define the label's visual identity. Leonard Feather contributes the liner notes, and the remastering is handled by Rudy Van Gelder, the engineer whose name is synonymous with the sound of classic jazz. For collectors and listeners alike, this volume remains a cornerstone of the bebop canon.
