The Heart Of Saturday Night by Tom Waits.
Written entirely by Tom Waits, this sophomore effort captures a singular artist stepping fully into his own voice—the boozy, late-night romanticism that would define his early catalog. Produced by Bones Howe and recorded at Wally Heider Recorders in Hollywood, it belongs to a particular mid-seventies moment when Waits was transforming beat-poet observation into something unmistakably musical. The cover illustration by Napoleon, framed by Cal Schenkel's art direction, gives the package its own faded, neon-lit charm.
Musically, this is Waits at his most tender and jazz-inflected, before the junkyard clatter of his later years took hold. His writing leans on smoky balladry and barroom reverie, carried by that unmistakable gravelly croon. Howe's production keeps things intimate and unhurried, letting the songs breathe, while Terry Dunavan's mastering lends the whole thing a warm, close-miked presence that suits the material's after-hours mood.
This particular copy is a repress bearing the black Elektra label with the orange logo, pressed in the U.S.A. and carrying the original 1974 Elektra/Asylum/Nonesuch copyright. For collectors, it's a chance to own one of the cornerstones of Waits' Asylum period—a record that rewards patient, low-volume listening with a drink close at hand. Few albums evoke the quiet melancholy of a city at 2 a.m. quite like this one, making it an essential pickup for any serious jazz or Waits shelf.
