The Remarkable Carmell Jones by Carmell Jones.

Few debut records announce a young talent with quite the assurance of "The Remarkable Carmell Jones." Recorded across three sessions on June 13, 14, and 30 of 1961 at Pacific Jazz Studio in Los Angeles, this is the sound of a trumpeter stepping into the light and knowing exactly what he wants to say. Produced by Richard Bock and originally released on Pacific Jazz Records that same year, the album has long stood as a cornerstone of the West Coast scene.

The program moves with confidence from the opening bounce of "I'm Gonna Go Fishing" into the timeless standard "Come Rain Or Come Shine," where Jones lets his tone breathe with a warmth and lyricism that belie his years. "Night Tide" closes the first side with a mood all its own, setting up a flip that trades introspection for real range.

Side two opens with the shadowed gait of "Sad March" before "Stellisa" and the closer "Full Moon And Empty Arms" round out a set that balances swagger and tenderness in equal measure. It is a compact, purposeful record, six performances that reward repeat listening and reveal a musician already in full command of his voice.

This reissue arrives as part of the celebrated Blue Note Tone Poet Series, and it treats the original music with the reverence it deserves. The audio was cut directly from the original analog tapes and mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, then manufactured at Record Technology Inc. (RTI) on 180 gram vinyl. The result honors the intimacy of those 1961 Pacific Jazz sessions while giving the horn and rhythm section room to move.

The physical package reflects the same care. The record includes an 11.5" x 11.5" monochrome, single side printed insert, and the "Blue Note Tone Poet Series" hype sticker sits on the front of the protective clear plastic bag. It is a presentation designed for the listener who values the object as much as the music inside it.

Issued as a Blue Note Records release under © 2022 UMG Recordings, Inc., and drawn from the album Richard Bock first shepherded to tape more than sixty years ago, this is a definitive way to experience Carmell Jones at the start of his story. For anyone building a serious jazz shelf, "The Remarkable Carmell Jones" earns its place both as a document of a moment and as a pressing that finally does justice to it.
