The Rumproller by Lee Morgan.

Lee Morgan's "The Rumproller" arrives here as part of Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Series, designated a Classic Vinyl Edition and pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Recorded on April 21, 1965, the session captures Morgan in the fertile mid decade stretch that followed his breakthrough success, delivering an album that balances hard swinging energy with the melodic sophistication that defined his playing.

The record opens with the title track, "The Rumproller," a strutting, immediately memorable theme that sets the tone for what follows. "Desert Moonlight" closes the first side with a more contemplative mood, while the flip offers three further statements: "Eclipso," the tender "Edda," and "The Lady" to bring the program home. Across these five performances Morgan moves between fire and lyricism with the assurance that made him one of Blue Note's most reliable draws.

This pressing has been mastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, the engineer whose work anchors the Classic Vinyl Series and its promise of audiophile vinyl reissues from the finest in jazz since 1939. Manufactured in Germany and carrying a 2020 copyright to UMG Recording, Inc., the release is a modern realization of a classic session, cut to draw the warmth and detail out of those source tapes.

Collectors attentive to catalog numbers will find several in play across the packaging. The front sleeve carries 84199, while the back sleeve adds ST-84199 alongside catalog number 0850312, which also appears on the spine. The labels themselves are printed with BST 84199, the familiar Blue Note stereo designation that ties this edition to the album's original identity.

A few printed footnotes reward the close reader. The back sleeve states that the album was "Originally released in 1962," while the labels declare it was "Originally released in 1966 by Blue Notes Records," two dates that sit at odds with each other and with the April 1965 recording session. These quirks, printed as they are, form part of the character of the physical object and give it a distinct fingerprint on the shelf.

The runout grooves hold further points of interest for those who like to inspect their pressings under the light. The matrix markings include a mirrored "1+" in one variant and mirrored "1T" and "1V" etchings in another, small etched details that speak to the pressing history of this release. Between the analog mastering, the German manufacture, and these deadwax curiosities, this Classic Vinyl Edition of "The Rumproller" makes a satisfying addition for anyone drawn to Lee Morgan and the enduring Blue Note sound.

Pressing Details:

The 'Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series' sticker on later production runs reads: "Audiophile Vinyl Reissues From the Finest in Jazz Since 1939." "Mastered from the Original Analog Tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio - 180 Gram Vinyl"
