The Sun Is Shining Down by John Mayall.

There is something remarkable about hearing a bluesman still burning this brightly, and "The Sun Is Shining Down" captures John Mayall doing exactly that. Released in 2022 by John Mayall under exclusive license to Forty Below Records, this is the sound of an artist who helped shape British blues returning to the studio with undimmed appetite. From the opening statement of "Hungry And Ready," the title feels less like a boast and more like a simple description of the man behind the microphone.

Mayall does the heavy lifting here in the way only he can, handling vocals while moving between an array of keyboards that give the record its warmth and depth. He plays Hammond B3 organ, piano, and Wurlitzer electric piano, and he still reaches for the harmonica when a song calls for that voice. That range means tracks like "Can't Take No More" and "Got To Find A Better Way" never sit still; there is always another texture waiting just underneath the groove.

The rhythm section keeps everything grounded and swinging. Greg Rzab lays down the bass guitar while Jay Davenport drives the beat on drums, and together they give Mayall the kind of steady, unfussy foundation the blues demands. Listen to "Driving Wheel," where Eric Corne steps in on rhythm guitar, and you can hear how much the band leans on that partnership to carry the momentum.

Guitar duties are shared with real character across the album. Carolyn Wonderland handles rhythm guitar on a good share of the set, including "Hungry And Ready," "I'm As Good As Gone," "One Special Lady," "A Quitter Never Wins," and "Deep Blue Sea," and she takes the lead on the closing title track, "The Sun Is Shining Down." Billy Watts adds his rhythm playing to "Can't Take No More" and "One Special Lady," giving those cuts an extra layer of grit.

A horn section rounds out the palette and lifts the whole affair toward something celebratory. Ron Dziubla on saxophone, Rich Rosenberg on trombone, and Mark Pender on trumpet bring punch and color, the kind of brass that turns a strong blues number into a full-bodied statement. On tracks like "Chills And Thrills," those horns feel essential rather than decorative.

The record was engineered, mixed, and produced by Eric Corne, who also co-produced alongside Mayall himself, with Michael Dumas and Thomas Ross Johansen serving as second engineers. The result is a polished, generous session that lets every player breathe. For collectors of the blues and admirers of a genuine elder statesman, this is a warm and worthy addition to the shelf.
