Tough Love by Tinsley Ellis.

Released in 2016 on his own Heartfixer Music imprint, "Tough Love" arrives as a fully self-directed statement from Tinsley Ellis, who wrote every track and produced the record himself. This particular pressing carries added weight for collectors: sold directly through Ellis' website, the first 500 copies were hand-numbered and signed by the artist. Notably, the LP diverges from the CD edition by omitting the track "Everything," making the vinyl its own distinct object rather than a simple reissue of the disc.

Musically, the album is rooted in Ellis' commanding electric guitar and expressive vocals, with a stripped, road-tested rhythm section of Steve Mackey on bass and Lynn Williams on drums holding the low end steady. Kevin McKendree, who also recorded and mixed the record, layers in organ, piano and even Mellotron and timpani for texture and color. Ellis stretches out on harmonica and Wurlitzer at points, while Jim Hoke's saxophone and Steve Herrman's trumpet add a horn-charged lift to the arrangements.

The result is a warm, unhurried blues session that rewards front-to-back listening, with McKendree's mastering-quality production giving each instrument room to breathe. For anyone building a serious blues shelf, a signed and numbered first-edition LP from one of the genre's most durable modern voices is exactly the kind of piece worth chasing.
