Trios: Chapel by Charles Lloyd.

On December 4, 2018, Charles Lloyd walked into the Elizabeth Huth Coates Chapel at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio, Texas, and turned a room of quiet acoustics into a vessel for one of the most intimate statements of his late career. "Trios: Chapel" captures that evening as it happened, a live recording that feels less like a performance and more like a conversation carried on in whispers and open spaces. The chapel setting is not incidental; you can sense the architecture in the sound, the way each phrase is allowed room to breathe and dissolve.

The album opens with "Blood Count," a piece that unfolds with the kind of tenderness that only comes when a musician has nothing left to prove. From there the record moves through "Song My Lady Sings" and "Ay Amor" on the first side, before turning to "Beyond Darkness" and closing with "Dorotea's Studio." Five pieces, unhurried, each given the space to reveal itself. This is Lloyd in trio form, a setting that strips music down to its essential dialogue and rewards close, attentive listening.

Issued by Blue Note Records, the label that has long served as a home for jazz of both fire and reflection, this pressing arrives as part of Lloyd's ongoing relationship with one of the most storied names in the music. The release is credited ℗© 2022 Charles Lloyd under exclusive license to UMG Recordings Inc., and the record was made in Germany, presented in a handsome gatefold jacket that opens the listening experience out into something you can hold and study.

The dedication printed on the rear cover carries real weight. This trio of trio recordings is dedicated to Phil Schaap, the beloved jazz historian and broadcaster whose devotion to the music shaped generations of listeners. Special thanks are extended to Charles Parrish and Bradley Kayser, who produced the concert with love and vision, a phrase that says a great deal about the spirit in which the evening was conceived and preserved.

For collectors who care about the details, the runouts are etched with "-59613-" stamped into the deadwax, a small mark of provenance for anyone who likes to trace a record back to its source. The publishing credits reflect the album's blend of standards and original writing, drawing on Tempo Music Inc., Forest Farm Music administered by Wixen Music, and Hadem Music Corp.

This is a record to sit with rather than one to play in the background. Bring the lights down, let the chapel come to you, and give Charles Lloyd the room he asks for.
