Triple Trey by Butcher Brown.

Butcher Brown have never been a band content to stay in one lane, and "Triple Trey" is the sound of the Richmond collective stretching out across a full canvas. From the opening moments of "Triple Trey - Intro / How Much A Dollar Cost," the record announces itself as something ambitious, a suite as much as an album, folding jazz, hip hop, soul, and funk into a single continuous statement that rewards front to back listening.

The core quartet drives everything here. DJ Harrison anchors the harmonic world on keyboards, Andrew Randazzo holds down the bass, Corey Fonville plays drums while wielding a sampling pad, and Morgan Burrs handles guitar and drum programming. That last detail matters: this is a band equally at home with live interplay and studio texture, where a programmed pattern and a played groove sit side by side without friction. Tracks like "Freeze Me," "Liquid Light," and "Git Along" show off that dual sensibility, warm and human yet built with a producer's ear.

The horn writing gives the album real depth and color. Marcus Tenney, credited as writer across the bulk of the material, shapes arrangements that call on a small orchestra of players: Suzette Fischer on alto saxophone and flute, J.C. Kuhl on baritone saxophone and flute, Charles Owens and Kevin Simpson on tenor, Simpson also on soprano, plus a brass section of trumpets from Bob Miller, Sam Koff, and Tennishu, trombones from Pete Anderson and Tye Proffitt, and the low end weight of Reggie Chapman on bass trombone and tuba. Tennishu doubles as the album's voice, lending lyrics and presence to the ensemble sound.

At the heart of side B sits the "777" sequence, an intro, the track itself, and an outro that frame the album's most focused idea before the record rolls through "Breevin'," "Cusian," and "Unbelievable." The "Triple Trey - Outro / How Much A Dollar Cost" then brings the main body of the work full circle, closing the loop opened on side A and reinforcing the sense that this is a composed whole rather than a loose collection of cuts.

Sides C and D operate as a separate 45 rpm single, a deliberate gear change from the rest of the set. "Guitarmy" occupies side C and "Peace" fills side D, given room to breathe at the faster speed for extra fidelity and impact. It is a fitting reward for anyone who plays the record in full, two extended statements set apart from the main program.

Recorded by Lance Koehler, mixed by Seth Presant, and mastered by Paul Blakemore, with artwork by Lou Beach and design by Tommy Steele, "Triple Trey" is a considered, deeply musical release from one of modern jazz's most restless bands.
