Wave by Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Released in 1967, this is one of Antonio Carlos Jobim's most beloved statements, arriving at the moment when bossa nova had matured from novelty into enduring art. Produced by Creed Taylor and recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's famed New Jersey studio across sessions in May and June of that year, it pairs Jobim's unmistakable compositions with the lush orchestral sensibility of arranger and conductor Claus Ogerman. The result is a meeting of Brazilian melody and sophisticated American studio craft, captured by one of jazz's greatest engineers.
Jobim anchors the record himself at the piano, guitar, and harpsichord, his understated touch at the center of everything. Around him, Ogerman marshals a remarkable cast: Ron Carter's supple bass, the brushwork and rhythm of drummers that include Dom Um Romão and Claudio Slon, and a warm bed of strings, French horn, and interweaving flutes and piccolos from players such as Jerome Richardson and Romeo Penque. Trombonists Jimmy Cleveland and Urbie Green add soft, burnished color throughout.
This particular copy is the red cover edition, with the tan label variant showing "Stereo" in the bolder font tucked beneath the CTI logo. Pete Turner's cover photography and Sam Antupit's design make it as handsome on the shelf as it is on the turntable. For collectors of Jobim, CTI-era production, or Van Gelder's work, it's a cornerstone pressing.
