Few debut albums arrive with as much electricity as "West Side Soul" by the Magic Sam Blues Band. From the opening jolt of "That's All I Need" through the barnstorming "I Feel So Good (I Wanna Boogie)," this record captures Magic Sam at the height of his powers, his vocals and guitar leading a band that swings, stings, and simmers in equal measure. It is a cornerstone of the Chicago West Side sound, and it plays like a man with everything to prove.
The heart of the album is Magic Sam himself on vocals and guitar, but he does not carry it alone. Mighty Joe Young adds a second guitar throughout, and Stockholm Slim's piano threads through the sessions with a rolling, barrelhouse feel. The rhythm section rotates between two lineups: Earnest Johnson on bass with Odie Payne on drums, and Mack Thompson on bass with Odie Payne III on drums, giving the record a subtle shift in pulse from track to track.
Highlights abound across both sides. "All Of Your Love" and "I Don't Want No Woman" showcase Sam's tremolo-drenched attack, while his reading of "Sweet Home Chicago" opens Side B with hometown pride. The lone instrumental, "Lookin' Good," lets the band stretch out, and the closer, "Mama, Mama - Talk To Your Daughter," sends the album off with sly, spirited energy. Between them sit gems like "I Found A New Love," "Every Night And Every Day," and the aching "My Love Will Never Die."
Behind the boards, the sessions were recorded by Stu Black and produced by Robert G. Koester, whose commitment to Chicago blues shaped so much of the era's catalog. Bill Lindemann supplied the liner notes, Jack Bradley contributed the photography, and Zbigniew Jastrzebski handled the cover design, resulting in a package as distinctive as the music it holds.
This pressing rewards a close look at the details. The lacquers were cut by two hands, with Brian Gardner cutting the Side A material and John Bittner cutting Side B, and the runouts are etched throughout, save for the stamped Wakefield "tulip" sign. Gardner's Side A runout carries a small etched floral mark as well, a nice touch for collectors who enjoy tracing a record's origins in the dead wax.
The jacket back is blue with a printed barcode in the upper right corner, the label address listed as 4243 N. Lincoln, Chicago IL 60618, and a small black box reading "Jacket Made in Canada" at the bottom right. The labels themselves show the earlier 4121 North Rockwell, Chicago, IL 60618 address, a detail worth noting for anyone chasing the specifics of this issue.
