Few records capture the moment a genre was born quite like this 1960 Atlantic set from Ray Charles. It arrives at the crossroads where gospel fervor, blues grit, and rhythm meet the rock and roll surge, and Charles stands at the center of it all as both composer and architect. He wrote the lion's share of the material himself, shaping nearly every corner of the album, while carefully chosen outside contributions from the songwriting team of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, and a piece from the great Percy Mayfield, round out a program that feels both personal and expansive.
Charles' presence dominates throughout, his piano and voice driving music that swings between call-and-response exuberance and the smoky ache of the blues. Because he authored so much of what you hear, the record plays like a direct transmission of his musical vision, with the Pomus-Shuman and Mayfield contributions adding welcome shades of color. The cover, designed by Marvin Israel with photography by Lee Friedlander, frames all of this with the understated cool that defined Atlantic's aesthetic in this era.
For collectors, this particular copy carries real distinction: a first re-pressing on the earliest red and purple label with the white fan, pressed 1959–1960. Its back cover lists the older West 57th Street address rather than the Broadway one, and its ring indention differs from other examples of the same label—small details that make this a genuinely desirable pressing.

1st re-pressing on the 1st version of the red & purple label (white fan). Pressed 1959-1960. Atlantic Records moved to 1841 Broadway in 1959, but this pressing could have used leftover record sleeves with the old address on them.
This version has a different ring indention compared to this same label version, [r2050059]. The back cover lists the West 57 Street address like [r5291060] and [r8538990], instead of the Broadway address used in [r2050059].
