Where? by Ron Carter.

Recorded on June 20, 1961 at Rudy Van Gelder's storied Englewood Cliffs studio, this album finds Ron Carter stepping into the spotlight as a leader, showcasing the singular voice that would make him one of the most recorded bassists in jazz history. Here he plays both bass and cello, expanding the harmonic and melodic possibilities of an instrument too often relegated to the rhythmic background.

Carter surrounds himself with a remarkable cast. The presence of a second bassist, the great George Duvivier, gives pieces like "Bass Duet" their unusual conversational depth, two masters trading ideas in the lower register. Mal Waldron anchors the sessions on piano, Charlie Persip drives the rhythm on drums, and the incomparable Eric Dolphy lends his restless imagination on bass clarinet, alto saxophone, and flute. That instrumental palette gives the record a striking range of colors, from the smoky low end to Dolphy's soaring, unpredictable flights.

The program moves with real variety. "Rally" opens Side A with momentum before "Bass Duet" turns inward, and the set includes a reading of "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise" that lets the ensemble stretch through familiar changes. The flip side leads with the title track "Where?," followed by "Yes Indeed" and the closing "Saucer Eyes," each offering fresh space for Carter and his collaborators to explore texture and interplay.

Behind the boards, this was supervised by Esmond Edwards, with recording by Rudy Van Gelder, whose ear defined the sound of so much classic jazz from this era. The original liner notes come from Joe Goldberg, with design and photography by Don Schlitten, giving the release its enduring visual and written character.

This 2024 reissue from Craft Recordings treats the music with the care it deserves. The all analog mastering was handled by Kevin Gray, who cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, it arrives in a tip-on sleeve with a textured front cover slick, and the obi carries additional liner notes by Pete Welding. The runouts are etched, a small mark of the attention paid throughout.

For collectors and listeners alike, this is a chance to hear a young Ron Carter asserting himself as a leader in the company of extraordinary players, captured with fidelity that honors the original 1962 release. It is an essential document of early sixties jazz, presented here with the sonic quality and physical presentation that this music has long deserved.
