Woodstock Sessions Vol. 3 (6/1/14) by Rich Robinson.

Captured live on June 1, 2014, this Woodstock Sessions Vol. 3 set finds Rich Robinson in his element, stretching out across four sides of vinyl with a band that plays loose but locked in. It is the kind of document that rewards a full listen, from the opening statement of "The Giving Key" through the sprawling closer, and it carries the unmistakable warmth of a room where everyone is listening to each other.

Robinson leads on guitar and vocals, and he surrounds himself with players who know how to serve the song. Dan Wistrom's second guitar weaves in alongside him, Ted Pecchio anchors the low end on bass, Joe Magistro drives things from the drum kit, and Matt Slocum colors the arrangements from behind the keyboards. Pecchio, Magistro, and Wistrom also lend backing vocals, giving numbers like "Gone Away" and "I Have A Feeling" a rich, communal lift.

The material moves easily between introspection and swagger. "By The Light Of The Sunset Moon" and "Laila II" show the reflective side of the set, while "One Cylinder" and "Answers (Action Direction)" lean into grit and momentum. Side C rolls through "Bye Bye Baby," "Answers (Action Direction)," and "I Know You," building toward a fourth side that opens with "Lost And Found" and takes on the Velvet Underground favorite "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'."

This expanded edition, produced by Robinson himself, carries a real prize for collectors: "Got To Get Better In A Little While," previously unreleased and tucked in as the final track. It is the sort of addition that turns a strong live album into an essential one, closing the program on a genuine rarity.

The record is a testament to careful hands at every stage. Chris Bittner and Kevin Salem recorded the session, with Michael Birnbaum also on recording duties, and the three of them shared the mixing along with Birnbaum's work at the board. The project was directed by John McDermott, with technical support from Jamie "Booya" Simpson and Sal Maneri, and a full crew rounding out the effort. Steven Markota handled the original design and layout, while Peter Tsakiris shaped the current design and layout for this pressing.

Robinson contributes the cover artwork and his own liner notes, joined by additional notes from Chuck Armstrong, so there is plenty to sit with while the music plays. Pressed in France and rounded out with a download card, this is a well-appointed edition of a live document worth returning to, a snapshot of Rich Robinson and a sympathetic band captured with clarity and feel.
