Worried Blues by Mississippi John Hurt.
Few blues records carry the quiet weight of a rediscovery the way this one does. Captured at Wynwood Recording Studio over three sessions in March 1964, it documents Mississippi John Hurt in the midst of his celebrated return to recording, decades after his early sides had slipped into obscurity. This particular pressing is itself a collector's curiosity: the Chesapeake labels bear catalog number CLP 13161, yet the discs sit in leftover Piedmont covers still showing PLP 13161, with the original contact details stickered over by Chesapeake. It's a tangible artifact of the small, family-run operation—Spottswood Music Co. of Arlington, Virginia—that helped bring Hurt's music back to the world.
Musically, this is Hurt at his most intimate and unhurried. He accompanies himself on vocals and guitar throughout, his warm, conversational singing wrapped around the gently rolling fingerpicked patterns that made him so influential. Most of the material is his own, with a pair of traditional songs woven in, all delivered with the unforced grace of a man playing for the sheer pleasure of it. Pete Kuykendall's recording keeps the sound close and natural, and Peter Bartok's mastering lets every string ring clearly.
Rounded out by Dick Spottswood's liner notes and photography by Bobby Dodd and Seth Beckerman, this is a warm, inviting record and a genuine piece of blues-revival history worth owning.
