Broadway - Blues - Ballads by Nina Simone.

Few artists could move between the theatrical stage, the smoky blues club, and the tender ballad with the fluency that Nina Simone commanded, and "Broadway - Blues - Ballads" makes that range its very organising principle. The title is a promise, and across these twelve tracks Simone delivers on all three fronts, folding show tunes, deep blues, and intimate confessions into a single, cohesive statement.

Side A opens with one of Simone's most enduring recordings, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," a song that has echoed through the decades and been reinterpreted by countless others, yet rarely with the raw dignity Simone brings to it here. From there the Broadway thread announces itself, with "Night Song" drawn from the musical "Golden Boy" and "Something Wonderful" lifted from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King And I," each reshaped in Simone's own image rather than performed as mere cover.

The blues and the playful sit comfortably alongside these theatrical selections. "The Laziest Gal In Town" carries a knowing wit, while "Don't Take All Night" and "Nobody" round out the first side with contrast and character. It is a sequence that rewards listening in order, moving the ear from the familiar to the surprising and back again.

Side B leans into the more devotional and reflective corners of Simone's art. "I Am Blessed" and "Of This I'm Sure" carry a spiritual undercurrent, while "See-Line Woman" stands as a highlight of her catalogue, built on a hypnotic call and response that feels rooted in something far older than the recording studio. "Our Love (Will See Us Through)" and "How Can I" keep the emotional temperature high before the album closes with "The Last Rose Of Summer," a traditional air that Simone renders with unhurried grace.

This is the Back to Black reissue, drawn from the album originally released on Verve in 1964, with the 2016 pressing produced under the Verve Music Group banner, a division of UMG Recordings Inc. It was made in Holland, and the pressing plant has been derived from the matrix.

The package includes a Back to Black voucher allowing you to download an MP3 version of the album, so the music travels with you beyond the turntable. Whether you come to it for the definitive "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," the incantatory pull of "See-Line Woman," or the sheer breadth of Simone's interpretive gift, this is a record that captures one of the twentieth century's most singular voices in full, restless command of her material.
