Nina Simone earned her reputation as one of the most commanding voices in twentieth century music, and "High Priestess Of Soul" carries that title into its very grooves. This is Simone in full flight, a performer who could move from tenderness to defiance in a single phrase, bending soul, blues, jazz, and gospel to her own singular will. The album gathers twelve performances that show just how wide her range could stretch.
Side A opens with "Don't You Pay Them No Mind" and moves through the restless energy of "I'm Gonna Leave You" before turning to her reading of "Brown Eyed Handsome Man." From there the set drifts through "Keeper Of The Flame" and the sly swing of "The Gal From Joe's," then lifts toward the spiritual current of "Take Me To The Water" and "I'm Going Back Home." It is a first half that refuses to stay in one place, and that restlessness is part of the pleasure.
Side B carries the same command. "I Hold No Grudge" and the haunting "Come Ye" lead into "He Ain't Comin' Home No More," a title that tells you everything about the ache Simone can summon. The closing stretch brings the driving "Work Song" and finishes with "I Love My Baby," leaving the record on a note of warmth after all the fire that came before.
This pressing is part of the Back To Black series, originally released with a phonographic copyright of 1967 by Verve Music Group and reissued in 2016 under the same label. It was made in Holland, and it includes a voucher to download an MP3 version of the album, so the music travels with you beyond the turntable.
