Just One Night by Eric Clapton.
Recorded live and captured with a directness that studio work rarely manages, "Just One Night" finds Eric Clapton in commanding form, leading a band that could shift from breezy country swing to deep, aching blues without losing a step. This double LP spreads fourteen performances across four sides, giving each song room to breathe and the players space to stretch out. It is the sound of a group that knows one another well, playing loud and playing true.
The set opens on a road-worthy note with "Tulsa Time," rolls into "Early In The Morning," and settles into the easy grooves of "Lay Down Sally" and the tender "Wonderful Tonight," a run that shows just how wide Clapton's range had become. Side two moves from "If I Don't Be There By Morning" into the smoky testimony of "Worried Life Blues," pairs the reflective "All Our Past Times" with a charged reading of "After Midnight," and never lets the momentum flag.
The back half of the record leans harder into the blues that always sat at the center of Clapton's playing. "Double Trouble" and "Blues Power" bookend the sprightly "Setting Me Up," while the final side delivers "Rambling On My Mind," the crowd favorite "Cocaine," and a rousing "Further On Up The Road" to close things out. Across all four sides, the guitar work is generous and the singing unguarded, the mark of a performer comfortable in front of an audience.
Much of the fire here comes from the band around Clapton. Albert Lee is a standout presence, contributing guitar, vocals, and keyboards, while Chris Stainton adds further keyboard color. Dave Markee holds down the bass and Henry Spinetti drives the rhythm from the drum kit, together giving Clapton the steady foundation he needs to reach for those long, singing solos. It is a lineup built for the stage, tight enough to lock in and loose enough to let the songs stretch.
Behind the boards, Jon Astley served as producer and engineer, sharing mixing duties with Phil Chapman, and the resulting sound has the presence and clarity that a live document demands. The package itself is a piece of design worth admiring, with cover art and art direction by David Stewart, illustration by Ken Konno, and photography from both Dave Brown and Koichiro Hiki, a collaboration that dresses the music in imagery as considered as the performances.
Collectors should note that this is a specific pressing, identifiable by the "56" marking on the labels and the "CP" etched into the runouts. For anyone drawn to Clapton on stage, doing what he does best in real time, this is an essential entry in the catalog and a rewarding listen from first groove to last.
